Background and The Opportunity
Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (Plan Indonesia) is a development and humanitarian organisation advancing children’s rights and equality for girls. In response to the flash floods and landslides affecting Aceh, Sumatra Utara, and Sumatra Barat, Plan Indonesia is mobilising an integrated emergency response under the Sumatra HEAL response.
Effective communication and information management are critical to ensure timely, transparent, and accurate messaging to affected communities, partners, donors, and the public. The Emergency Response Communications coordinator will lead efforts to coordinate humanitarian communication, manage information flows, and safeguard the organisation’s reputation during this crisis.
Dimension of Role
Reporting to the Humanitarian Program Manager and coordinating closely with the Outreach & External Communication Manager, the Communication Coordinator is responsible for developing and executing communication and information management strategies during humanitarian emergencies.
This role ensures that affected communities receive clear, accurate, and culturally sensitive information; that Plan Indonesia’s response is visible and accountable to stakeholders; and that media, donors, and partners are kept informed of progress and impact.
Key Responsibility :
Emergency Communications Strategy
- Lead the design and execution of emergency communication and information management strategies.
- Develop and implement a tailored communications plan for Sumatra: Produce and disseminate situation reports, press releases, multimedia content, and donor updates.
- Establish systems for collecting, verifying, and disseminating response data and situation report (SITREP).
- Humanitarian Storytelling: Document and share impact stories, ensuring ethical and safeguarding standards.
- Manage emergency communications budget and resources efficiently.
- Monitor communication effectiveness and adapt strategies based on feedback and evolving needs.
- Uphold safeguarding, ethical storytelling, and humanitarian communication standards.
2. Community Engagement
- Ensure affected communities receive timely, accessible, and safe information about services, rights, and protection.
- Ensure consistent, transparent, and culturally appropriate messaging to communities and stakeholders.
3. Networks and Partnership:
- Coordinate with local, national and global media to provide accurate coverage of Plan Indonesia’s response.
- Coordinating with Media and External Communication Coordinator to produce emergency-related content across digital platforms to amplify visibility.
- Collaborating with the Outreach & External Communication Manager, develop and deliver messaging during sensitive or high-risk situations to protect organisational reputation.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with media outlets, humanitarian communication networks, and government agencies.
- Delivering capacity building for partners’ communication staff or volunteers deployed in the field.
- Serve as a focal point for communication with humanitarian clusters, government agencies, and Plan International’s global emergency communication hubs.
- Track communication outputs, information flows, and stakeholder feedback to improve effectiveness.
- Coordinate with program teams to ensure accurate data and impact stories are shared externally.
Requirements for The Role:
Essential
- University degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Humanitarian Affairs, or related field.
- Minimum 7–10 years of experience in communications, with at least 3 years in humanitarian/emergency contexts.
- Proven expertise in information management and humanitarian communication standards.
- Strong writing and storytelling skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
- Experience working with media, humanitarian clusters, and government agencies.
- Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms.
- Ability to work under pressure in rapidly changing environments.
