 About Plan International

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organization that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. In Indonesia, Plan International operates since 1969, and in 2017 Yayasan Plan International Indonesia (YPII) was established as a national entity of Plan International in Indonesia. YPII is currently implementing its Country Strategy 5 (CS 5) covering the fiscal year 2023 to 2027, where the country’s purpose is in line with the global Plan International’s Purpose “to advance children’s rights and equality for girls”. Our ambition is to enable at least 3 million girls and young women to be healthy, educated, empowered, safe and protected. It means that we will take action to identify and facilitate the removal of obstacles that prevent children, especially girls, and young women from enjoying their rights and participating fully in Indonesian society. This goal will be achieved by implementing quality programmes and projects as well as influencing decision-makers and key stakeholders to make the required changes.

Project Background

The RISE UP, GIRL! project aims to ensure that adolescent girls and young women in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), can live free from violence, continue their education, delay marriage and first pregnancy, and pursue their aspirations. The initiative addresses harmful gender norms, limited parent–adolescent communication, and gaps in child protection and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) information and services, which contribute to child, early, and forced marriage and unions (CEFMU), adolescent pregnancy, school dropout, and gender-based violence.

Working across 10 target villages, the project will empower adolescent girls and boys through life skills, leadership, SRHR education, and future planning sessions. It will also engage parents and caregivers in positive parenting, strengthen teachers’ capacity to provide safe and inclusive learning environments, and establish or improve school- and community-based prevention, reporting, and referral mechanisms. At the institutional level, the project will collaborate with local government agencies to strengthen gender-responsive policies, protection services, coordination, budgeting, and data systems related to CEFMU and adolescent pregnancy.

Through these integrated interventions, the project seeks to improve girls’ decision-making agency, support married or pregnant girls to remain in or return to education, prevent early and unintended pregnancy and violence, and contribute to breaking intergenerational cycles of gender inequality, poverty, and malnutrition.
