The Youth & Economic Empowerment team at Plan International USA is preparing to host the 2019 Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) in Washington, D.C. The YLA will bring together young people from around the country to elevate youth voices and perspective in the global arena. The YLA will be five days of workshops and activities that empower young people to lead and organize others for change. The YLA will culminate with a fully formed Leadership Development Project for each participant.


The Youth Leadership Academy Intern role is a temporary 20 hour a week position from January– May 31, 2019. The intern will provide administrative and logistical support to plan and execute the YLA. The intern will also work with staff and Plan’s Youth Advisory Board to recruit youth participants, design workshops, and arrange activities for young people ages 14 – 18 during the YLA which will be held at University in the Washington, D.C. area.



  • Design marketing materials for YLA recruitment.
  • Conduct in-person and digital outreach with schools, youth networks, and youth serving organizations.
  • Participate in Youth Advisory Board subcommittee planning calls and design workshop.
  • Aid in the design and facilitation of workshops and activities.
  • Organize and procure necessary supplies.
  • Research and book external consultants and cultural activities.
  • Update and manage paperwork related to the event.
  • Manage the YLA email account.
  • Develop monitoring and evaluation tools for the YLA.
  • Engage with families/guardians in the lead up to the YLA.
  • Prepare materials for and assist participants in the pre-design of their leadership development project.
  • Adhere to Plan’s policies involving confidentiality and child protection.


Skills Required

  • Must be age 18 or older;
  • Must be able to work independently, in a fast paced environment;
  • Must have experience planning events for young people;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Exceptional problem solving skills;
  • Ability to engage collaboratively within diverse groups;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, tight deadlines, and priorities;
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, make and communicate good decisions;
  • Experience with administrative and logistical duties;
  • Experience or interest in youth development and international development;
  • Bilingual skills and overseas experience is desirable.


Education and Experience

  • Working towards or completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in relevant field required (international development, youth development, education, etc.)
  • Experience with event planning
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with youth leadership and youth development
  • French and/or Spanish proficiency preferred
