The Opportunity
The position holder is primarily responsible for leading and implementing the WASH development as well as the humanitarian component of the integrated WASH, Health, and Nutrition project in Gambella regional state, and ensuring the linkage to the Country WASH Program at the project level. The post holder is responsible for the delivery of results in line with pre-agreed project plans and objectives, and oversees Project implementation at all stages throughout the project cycle. Given that a significant amount of the project thematic activities is done in partnership with key government sector offices, s/he will have also a key aspect of the role is nurturing, developing, and facilitating the achievement of results.
The Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Officer (SHPO) works under the direct supervision of the WASH Coordinator and is responsible for supporting the implementation of hygiene, sanitation promotion, and water supply activities. The role ensures that interventions follow established standards, principles, and participatory approaches
The Individual
- University degree in Environmental Health, Water supply, Public Health, Health Education or a related subject. Adequate experience in the field will substitute for formal qualifications.
- Minimum 4 years of solid experience with experience in the Sanitation & hygiene promotion work in the WASH sector, and experience in emergency WASH is advantageous.
- Experience in WASH facilities construction, maintenance, & Rehabilitation in a complex and demanding workload.
- Substantial experience in coordinating, mobilizing the community, planning, implementing, supervising, monitoring, and reporting related to the role
- Ability and willingness to travel and work in rural areas where the project is implemented, within approved security frameworks.
- Strong interpersonal skills, communication, presentation, and facilitation skills, and an ability to train and mentor staff.
- Good computer skills (particularly Excel, Word, and databases).
Languages required:
- Fluency in English and Amharic (knowledge of local languages is a plus).

Safeguarding Children and Young People (Safeguarding) and Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI)
- Understands and puts into practice the responsibilities under Safeguarding and GEI policies and Plan International’s Code of Conduct (CoC), ensuring that concerns are reported and managed in accordance with the appropriate procedures.
- Ensures that the team members under supervision are properly inducted on and understands their role in upholding Plan International’s safeguarding and GEI policies;
- Ensures that Plan International’s global policies for Safeguarding Children and Young People and Gender Equality and Inclusion are fully embedded in day-to-day work.
- Ensures that Plan Ethiopia contributes to Plan International’s global efforts to ensure safeguarding and GEI, including making sure that relevant reporting and data are submitted.
